CES 2012: Sony Xperia S: HD powerhouse unveiled

Sony has announced a second smartphone under its own brand: simply named the Sony Xperia S.

Seemingly a worldwide version of the Xperia Ion, we get a 12MP camera with LED flash on board with a front camera capable of recording in 720p.

It's also got a dual core 1.5GHz processor, the ability to record in 1080p (on the rear), but sadly only runs on Android 2.3 at launch.

However, Sony has been the most open about its Ice Cream Sandwich update schedule among the big brands, and we're told the Ice Cream Sandwich update will happen in Q2 2012.

There's a 4.3-inch Reality display on board too, with a high quality 1280 x 700 resolution screen on offer – Sony's clearly serious about getting on board with the top-end displays.

Snap happy

Sony's still all about the imaging on its smartphones, so we're treated to the same speedy start up of 1.5 seconds from standby as the Ion.

More intriguingly, the Xperia S is also Sony's first handset with an NFC chip, although we've yet to hear of any applications that can use this functionality.

The Xperia S will be Playstation Certified too, meaning you'll have a host of PS One classics to play at launch, and with HD sharing through DLNA or the microHDMI port, you can also stream the games to the bigger screen.

"The Sony Xperia S is an HD powerhouse with iconic minimalist design; it can connect throughout your home to a bigger screen to seamlessly share content. We intend to re-define what a smartphone through an immersive entertainment experience," said Kaz Hirai, executive VP of Sony.

The Sony Xperia S UK release date has been set for March 2012, although we've yet to hear how much the new display and dual core innards hike up the price.
