Don't roll your eyes: Galaxy S4 may include eye-tracking software

With just a little over a week to go until Samsung's big Galaxy S4 reveal on March 14, more purported information about what the Android smartphone will feature are making the rounds.

There's been speculation as to whether or not the Galaxy S4 will include the much-hyped Exynos 5 octo-core chip, as opposed to a quad-core similar to the one currently housed in the Galaxy S3.

However, the latest bit of news surrounding the S4 has less to do with the typical hardware leaks and more to do with some possibly ground-breaking features.

Well, ground breaking as long as you don't mind your smartphone watching over you while you browse the web.

Why does it feel like somebody's watching me

According to a new report in the New York Times, Samsung's Galaxy S4 will include new technology that allows the phone to track a user's eye movements.

The undisclosed software was revealed to the newspaper by a source currently in possession of an S4. This slippery source claimed the tracking will be used to scroll documents and web pages.

However, the unnamed tipster wasn't sure if the feature would be shown off during next week's event.

The Times also reported Samsung did indeed file two trademarks for the software, with "Eye Scroll" being the European designation, and "Samsung Eye Scroll" as the name in the U.S.

That U.S. trademark was only just filed in February, and described the feature as "sensing eye movements and scrolling displays of mobile devices, namely mobile phones, smartphones and tablet computers according to eye movements."

The Galaxy S3 already includes some tracking similar to this, as it will keep the screen lit when it recognizes a person is looking at the device through the front-facing camera.

Eye-tracking technology has been appearing here and there over the past year, and the success of Samsung's rumored attempt with the S4 could have ramifications for other companies across the tech industry that attempt the same thing.
