Motorola Razr HD phone launch is a false alarm

Rumors swirled Tuesday that Motorola would release a new phone Friday, specifically the highly anticipated Droid Razr HD. But, if company representatives are to be believed, the speculation was a false alarm.

"We're sorry for the confusion, but it's a Facebook game asking people to guess a current smartphone and not meant to come across as a new phone," said Becki Leonard, a Motorola spokeswoman.

Leonard was referring to a posting on Motorola's Facebook page showing a silhouetted smartphone with the teaser line, "Let's play a game, Guess the Smartphone."

The post continued, "We'll give a clue each day all week and make the big reveal on Friday. I have the power of 4G LTE. Which smartphone am I?"

'You've got the wrong phone'

Facebook commenters quickly started speculating the phone would be the Droid Razr HD, but Leonard and Motorola chief communications officer Jennifer Erickson denied it's the phone the posting is referring to.

"It's a phone already on the market," Erickson said. "It's 'which current smartphone is this?'"

Leonard wouldn't comment on when the Razr HD would be coming out or whether an announcement - other than revealing the answer to the Facebook game - is planned for Friday.

"We don't comment on rumor or speculation," she said.

Photos surfaced Thursday supposedly showing the Razr HD Android. If the photos are authentic, the phone will have Motorola's signature Kevlar backplane in an all-new diamond pattern, among other modifications.

Leonard wouldn't confirm or deny the validity of these photos, either.

Is Motorola trying to throw us off the scent of the Razr HD's release? TechRadar will report any updates as they become available.
