PUBG news and updates: what’s new in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

$

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (or PUBG as it’s commonly known) spearheaded the popularity of battle royale games. It was a breakout hit that inspired countless competitors such as Fortnite and Apex Legends, but it still remains one of the most played games on Steam and Xbox Live.

Unlike its rivals, PUBG is a more simulation-focused affair, with real-world weapons and physics to consider, such as bullet drop and variable weather conditions. If you’ve been turned off by Fortnite’s flamboyant art style or the relentlessly fast gameplay of Call of Duty: Warzone, PUBG is well worth a go – it’s also on Xbox Game Pass.

Since its meteoric rise from a Steam Early Access title to achieving the highest concurrent player count on Steam back in 2018, PUBG has made its way to PS4, Xbox One, Stadia, Android and iOS. There’s also PUBG Lite, a free-to-play adaptation of the game which can run on lower-spec hardware, such as laptops. PUBG also receives regular updates, adding new content, features and – perhaps somewhat predictably – plenty of fixes for annoying bugs.

Where we droppin'?

But what is PUBG? Well, if you’ve ever watched the film Battle Royale, you should understand the basic idea. 100 players drop onto a deserted island and quickly scavenge for loot. You’ll need to find armor, weapons and healing items, then do whatever it takes to survive until you’re the last man standing.

To make things more interesting, you’ll have to move to a constantly shrinking zone that randomly appears on the map, via land, air or sea. If you get caught outside of the zone, you’ll gradually take damage, which increases dramatically as the game progresses. Pro tip: don’t get caught outside the zone.

Should you manage to survive until the very end, you’ll see the coveted “winner winner chicken dinner” phrase appear on screen. And due to the overwhelming odds stacked against you during every match, you’ll probably want to screenshot it as they don’t come around very often – which makes them taste all the sweeter.

Despite the game now being available on multiple platforms, PUBG continues to evolve with the addition of new maps, survivor passes and modes for players to enjoy. We’ll show you what’s new, why it matters, and what’s planned for the future of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

What's the latest PUBG update for PC?

Update 7.2 (now available)

PUBG Update 7.2

Update 7.2 is now available for PC players to install. The sizable update introduces a number of pleasing changes to the game, the most crucial of which is Ranked Mode.

Ranked Mode

Ranked Mode replaces the old Survival Title system and is a separate mode to the new normal match, which will include the universally disliked PUBG bots. A player's rank will increase or decrease depending on their performance in each game and, perhaps somewhat controversially, ranked mode is only available to squads.

Each Ranked Mode match will include a maximum of 64 players (that's quite a bit less than the usual 100 player limit) and players will compete on either Erangel, Miramar or Sanhok. The red zone has also been removed, and the timing and speed of the blue zone have been increased.

Bot opponents

Seemingly undeterred by the criticism from console players, developer PUBG Corp is adding bots to the PC version of PUBG with update 7.2. Thankfully there is a way to avoid them as they'll only appear in normal games, but it's a divisive addition nonetheless. Bots are also designed to appear less frequently as your skill increases, but that hasn't been the case sadly, which the developers are aware of.

Gameplay balances

More adjustments have been to made to the strength and characteristics of each weapon type, with the M416 receiving a slight nerf, while other assault rifles such as the M16A4, Beryl M762 and MK47 Mutant will get a nice buff.

One of the biggest new gameplay changes is how gas cans can be used. You can now pour fuel onto the ground and light it with a weapon or throwable, and you can rain fire down upon your opponents by shooting a thrown gas can while it's mid-air. Frustratingly, we'll have to wait a little longer for the gas can changes to arrive as PUBG Corp has pulled them from the latest patch due to technical issues.

Introducing Season 7: Vikendi returns, along with a ‘new’ weapon and Survivor Pass

PUBG new Vikendi

Update 7.1 sees the long-awaited return of Vikendi, PUBG’s snow-covered map that was unceremoniously hooked during Season 6. The old Vikendi was generally disliked by players due to its many performance issues and rather uninspiring locations. That’s all changed this time around, though, as Vikendi has received a significant face-lift and a bevy of new attractions for players to wage war on.

The old dilapidated Dino Park has now been transformed into the fun-loving Dinoland, which has been completely remade to feel like a proper amusement park. There are also nine functioning trains that chug around the map – and yes, you can ride them to one of the 12 stations.

PUBG Vikendi Dinoland

Further changes include tweaks and redesigns to certain locations, such as Abbey and Mount Kreznik, and you’ll notice there’s a lot less snow on the ground now, too. For that reason, the snow bikes and snowmobiles have been removed in favor of the standard motorcycle, and motorcycle with sidecar.

It wouldn’t be a big new update without a fresh weapon being added to the mix, although the Mosin-Nagant isn’t entirely new. It’s essentially a re-skin of the popular Kar98k, but it does sport its own unique look and sound effects. Hey, we’re all for variety, so it’s not a deal breaker by any means.

Finally, there’s a brand-new Survivor Pass to grind through, called ‘Cold Front’. It consists of 100 levels full of unlockable skins, experience bonuses, challenges to complete and emotes to collect.

What's the latest PUBG update for Xbox One and PS4?

Season 7 is out now

Since Season 6, developer PUBG Corporation has tried to align its PC and console updates more closely. Usually it takes about two weeks before consoles catch up with the PC version of the game, but that gap has closed recently, particularly with the release of Season 7 which arrived April 28. It brings all the goodies from the PC version, including new Vikendi and the Survivor Pass: Cold Front.

One of the biggest changes to PUBG on consoles is the addition of bots, which have been added to each map. While it’s an update that is bound to cause controversy among the purists, bots have been included to help new players get familiar with the game. In a recent blog post, PUBG Corporation outlined how bots will work in the game, with the intention that they act like your average human player, but are obviously easier to kill.

It looks like console players will finally get to leave bots behind as the long-awaited Ranked Mode arrives on May 26 as part of update 7.2, according to the developer.

Can I play PUBG on mobile?

PUBG mobile news and updates

Yes! With PUBG mobile, you can win chicken dinners directly from your phone. The game is more arcade-like and accessible than the PC and console versions of the game, but it shares all the maps and features that players have come to enjoy. You can expect things like auto pick-up, aim assist and touchscreen controls and other mobile optimizations.

To play PUBG on your mobile, you’ll need to be using at least iOS 9 (that’s an iPhone 5S or newer) and Android owners must be using 5.1.1. Lollipop or later. You’ll also need 2GB or RAM to play the game, and 900 MB of free space.

In the latest patch, PUBG mobile has received a ‘Death Replay’ option, letting you see who the hell shot you in the back, and ‘Arctic Mode’, a brand new survival experience that will be available soon.

What is PUBG Lite?

PUBG Lite news and updates

PUBG Lite is a stripped-down version of PUBG that’s designed for lower-spec hardware. PUBG is notoriously taxing on GPUs and CPUs, so PUBG Lite was created so that more people could get in on the battle royale craze. It’s a great alternative if you don’t own a powerful gaming PC or console to play on, plus it’s free-to-play.

Can I play PUBG on Stadia?

PUBG Stadia

You sure can! The game is free to Stadia Pro members, and supports cross-play with Xbox One and PS4. It's the most up-to-date version of the game, too, which means it includes all the maps and the latest features from the recent 7.1 update. There's no download or patches, either, so you can start playing instantly.

What's coming to PUBG on PC?

Although new content is always in the pipeline along with regular performance updates, the developers of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds are taking the fight to cheaters in 2020. In a dev letter to players, Taeseok Jang, executive producer of PUBG PC, outlined the company’s plans.

“The fight against cheat programs is never-ending and something we’ve been trying very hard to find a solution for. Last year, we spent time working on various measures to block cheat programs. Most of these actions focused on blocking cheat program developers to make it more difficult for them to create these highly lucrative cheats,” Jang explains.

“As these cheat developers excel at adapting to our measures, we chose to keep these efforts secret to increase the time it takes for them to react, as much as possible. The unfortunate side effect of this is that it makes us look like we’re doing nothing against a high-priority issue. This year, we will be making improvements to ensure players can feel the impact of our efforts."

PUBG Corporation is also turning its efforts to address PUBG’s performance issues, which continue to be a source of frustration for many players. The game has often been prone to game-breaking bugs, such as hard crashes and fluctuating frame rates, which can mean the difference between life or death in a fire fight.

Jang admitted that the developer has struggled to get the balance right between adding new content and dealing with performance. “First of all, we know it hasn’t been the best year for this category so far, with persistent network, server, and game client issues. Although providing a high level of service is always one of our top priorities, specific issues have endured for far too long and overshadow any good improvements we make. Hitching and game crashes especially have increased and remained persistent in the recent months. Your feedback has been heard loud and clear and is completely justified.”

What's coming to PUBG on Xbox One and PS4?

Along with reducing the content gap between the PC and console versions of PUBG, the developers want to continue to improve the game’s performance on console, bring further console-specific adjustments, and strengthen anti-cheat detection.

PUBG Corporation has also released a blog post that says they are investigating the possibility of bringing a 60fps performance mode to Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, which would be a huge boon for console players. Currently, PUBG is locked to 30fps on consoles, while other competitive battle royale games, such as Call of Duty: Warzone and Apex Legends, treat players to a silky-smooth 60fps experience.

How to watch Code 404 online: stream the new Sky comedy from anywhere

From Bad Boys and Lethal Weapon to Hot Fuzz, it's safe to say that the buddy cop genre has numerous options for film fans to consider - and now there's a new TV show to add to the discussion. Read on to find out how to watch Code 404 online from anywhere in the world, including for free wherever possible.

Code 404 stars Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays - no strangers to crime-related roles, having both appeared in the altogether more serious Line of Duty - this new 6-part show sees the pair work for the Special Investigation Unit at the London Met.

Mays' character, Detective Inspector John Major, is a celebrated Met Police special investigations. But he's (minor spoiler alert) killed off at the start of the first episode after being shot in an undercover sting operation.

The twist comes when he's brought back to life, thanks to some revolutionary technology. Sadly, some of the AI tech used in his resurrection was a little off, meaning it's a new but not necessarily improved DI Major that comes back to life.

To complicate matters, in the time that it has taken for him to be brought back into action, his partner Detective Inspector Roy Carver (Graham) and his wife Kelly (Anna Maxwell Martin) have started an affair and moved in together.

With a stellar cast and an interesting twist on the genre, it's a new show you won't want to miss. Find out how to watch Code 404 online from anywhere by following out guide below.

How to watch Code 404 for free in the UK

How to watch Code 404 from outside your country

As Code 404 is a Sky One exclusive, anyone from the UK who's currently away from home won't find it being aired simultaneously in places like the USA, Canada or Australia. Moreover, trying to tune into Sky or a related service like Now TV will likely be impossible because of geo-blocking restrictions.

We know that this might not be a likely scenario for many, due to coronavirus travel restrictions, but the fact is people are still being required to travel - and some are even regrettably stuck abroad during this difficult time.

Fortunately, there is a solution in the form of a VPN. This nifty bit of software changes your IP address so that you can access all the content you normally would at home, from anywhere in the world.

However, note that some services require you to verify local credit card or cable subscription details before gaining access, so make sure you have these to hand before signing up for anything.

PayPal now lets you pay with QR codes

PayPal is introducing the ability to use QR Codes to buy and sell goods without making physical contact

The roll out of the QR code functionality in the PayPal app allows customers to buy or sell in in-person, safely, securely and touch free, in the UK and 27 markets around the globe.

Additionally, for a limited time, PayPal is waiving its standard seller transaction fees incurred on sales conducted using a QR Code.

“We know that in the current environment, buying and selling goods in a health-conscious, safe and secure way is front of mind for many people around the world. As the coronavirus situation has evolved, we have seen a surge in demand for digital payments to transition to include new in-person environments and situations,” said John Kunze, Senior Vice President of Branded Experiences, PayPal.

“The rollout of QR codes for buyers and sellers not only incorporates the safety, security and convenience of using PayPal in-person, but also takes into consideration ongoing social distancing requirements, even as we start to see some restrictions be lifted around the world.”

Lisa Scott, Senior Director, PayPal, said: “Covid-19 has changed the shopping experience in the UK as we know it. The need for security and convenience is there, as always, but we now need to be able to sell and buy in a way that is quick, safe and involves limited social contact. Digital payments, and this QR code functionality, provides people and small businesses in the UK with the means to pay and get paid during the crisis and hopefully thrive in the future.”

Safer purchasing

Using the QR code functionality in the PayPal app is a quick and safe way to complete a transaction in-person utilising a PayPal wallet, eliminating the need to handle cash. For example, customers who are selling items in-person at local coffee shop can print a QR code, place it on their table and have their consumers simply scan, enter the amount they’re paying and send money immediately.

This allows the seller to minimise physical interactions with the customer, while also limiting the customer’s interaction with checkout technology. There is no technology to touch or purchase - just aim a smartphone camera at a QR Code that is printed or present on another screen.

For a buyer looking to pay, customers can go to the PayPal app, click ‘Send’ and tap the QR code symbol in the top right-hand corner. The camera will open and customers can scan a seller’s QR code and follow the prompts to complete the transaction. Sellers can create a PayPal-generated QR code by following the steps outlined here.

PayPal is rolling this functionality out to 28 markets around the globe including: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, United Kingdom and the United States.

Apple MacBooks could be getting their biggest redesign in years

$
0
0

Apple’s MacBooks could see some major innovative changes in the possibly near-ish future, including a built-in charger for an iPhone, a dynamic trackpad that can be resized, and indeed a keyboard that senses gestures (and more).

These possible design elements were revealed courtesy of Patently Apple, which spotted a couple of patents successfully filed by the MacBook maker.

The first patent is for a ‘dynamic input surface’ to replace the traditional trackpad. As it is, the MacBook trackpad sits beneath the keyboard in the middle of the chassis, but the new idea would be to make the entire area beneath the keyboard deck an illuminated trackpad, which could be easily adjusted by the user to be smaller or larger (even running the entire width of the chassis, if that was wanted).

Some form of haptic feedback would also be included, and simple finger gestures could be used to adjust the size of the illuminated trackpad, going by the illustrations that accompany the patent. The broader idea is, apparently, to get MacBook owners used to this customizable trackpad concept, before moving to replace the keyboard entirely with a similar illuminated model.

That idea has been floated before, as we saw a few years ago with one Apple patent which described a virtual keyboard that used illuminated symbols which could light up to make a QWERTY pattern, or be reconfigured to whatever input scheme you might need. Watch this dynamically-adjustable-illuminated-space, we guess…

Finger tracking good

In short, it seems increasingly likely that some big design changes are in the pipeline for MacBooks, and the rumor mill also reckons that one of these could be the switch to an ARM processor rather than Intel chips, which is allegedly happening

Also along these lines, the second Apple patent which has been granted describes a keyboard that has a transparent finger sensing system overlaid on top of the keys. This would allow the user to draw directly on top of the keyboard with their finger, allowing for lines or boxes to be drawn in a document for example, or to facilitate pinch-and-zoom style gestures.

MacBook Patent

Another idea is to implement a phone charging pad directly into the chassis of the MacBook, to the left of the trackpad (in the palm rest area), which you can place your iPhone on and have it wirelessly charged. That could be a pretty neat touch for those who are invested in their Apple gadgets.

Further potential avenues of exploration patented here include not just having this iPhone charger built into the palm rest area of the MacBook, but also biometric sensors. These could provide hardware security measures such as palm detection (or wrist detection) to verify the user, and possibly also take readings like heart rate or temperature.

And given the current coronavirus pandemic, it’s easy to see how your MacBook having a built-in thermometer capability to warn you if your temperature gets high might be a useful early warning system, so you can go and get yourself checked out properly.

There are lots of ideas here, then, and while Apple files a lot of patents full-stop, this rash of ideas for keyboard and trackpad functionality comes on top of an increasing amount of such concepts, which makes it seem clear enough that the MacBook maker has big plans for its laptop input peripherals.

We’ve previously seen the company patenting concepts for more reliable optical switches for keyboards, and ideas around virtual keyboards for Apple laptops have been filed since 2011 (including a dual-display device with a second screen that can act as a virtual OLED keyboard).

Where to buy a Nintendo Switch: where you can get a Switch Lite right now

Looking for where to buy a Nintendo Switch? You're far from alone. Nintendo Switch stock has been hard to come by over the last few months, with the US in particular being deprived of stock for a long time. The same can't be said for Switch the UK, however, as we're seeing flashes of new stock popping up at a number of retailers over the past weeks. Amazon, Currys, and Very have all offered Nintendo Switch deals recently, so keep checking back if you're feeling the itch. Scroll down for retailers that still have the console in stock in the US and UK.

Update: the Nintendo Switch is in stock for £299 at Amazon UK, but get it quick if you want it.

Why does the Switch keep selling so fast? It's partly because people have been stuck indoors a lot lately, but it's also because supplies have reportedly been challenging. Read on for more of what we know about the Switch, and when we expect it to come back into stock.

Check out our Nintendo Switch bundles and deals page for an around-the-clock update on how the console's supplies are doing, but you're much more likely to find a handheld-only Switch Lite out there right now than the base Switch.

Where to buy Nintendo Switch now: here's the last remaining Switch and Switch Lite stock

If you're looking for the full, dockable Nintendo Switch console in the US and Australia, you will have to wait. Stock has completely dried up. In the UK, though, you might find a few models here and there.

If you're looking for where to buy a handheld-only Nintendo Switch Lite, you may be in more luck. There's still a little stock across US, UK and Australia for you to take advantage of, but grab one now if you want it. We'll keep refreshing this page when we find stock.

Why is the Nintendo Switch selling out?

It's a combination of a few factors: the global pandemic has led to a rush of people buying the console to fill their hours indoors, which isn't surprising. At the same time, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has released, a long-awaited game and a massive crossover hit that's captured the imaginations of a wider, mainstream audience. The Switch has been regularly selling out for a while now. This has just exacerbated the issue.

In addition, back in February, Bloomberg posted a report warning that a potential bottleneck with component supplies coming out of China (caused by coronavirus) would see stock dry up as soon as April. If the reasoning mentioned in that report was correct, it looks like they were pretty on the money with the timing, except stock looks like it'll be gone even faster than that.

"Nintendo Switch hardware is selling out at various retail locations in the US, but more systems are on the way. We apologize for any inconvenience," is what Nintendo told THR in a statement. So, more stock is on the way. But when will you you be able to buy a Nintendo Switch?

When will the Nintendo Switch be back in stock?

The situation is hard to predict given that Nintendo has reportedly faced supply line issues over the current health crisis, but Nintendo intends to make 10% more consoles than it did in 2019 to help meet the increase in demand (assuming its supply lines can keep up_. A Nintendo representative told Nikkei, though, that it can't be sure how many Switch units will be supplied as it procures parts for the console.

Our prediction? The Switch will be hard to get hold of all year, but we'd be surprised if we see many more new units released as parts of the world are in lockdown. We're hopeful we'll see the Switch more readily available in the summer months.

Again, this is just our best guess, but you can be guaranteed that when the Switch does come back, folks will be rushing to claim the new consoles. It's very likely to sell out again.

In the meantime, our advice is to avoid being gouged by third-party sellers who are inflating the price. $299.99/£279.99/AU$469 is the MSRP/RRP for the regular Switch, while $199.99/£199.99/AU$329 is the price for the Switch Lite. Paying above that isn't worth it unless you're picking up a bundle with games and accessories.

Where to buy Nintendo Switch when stock returns

As soon as those consoles hit that warehouse, retailers are going to want to get them on the shelves. And you can bet they'll be flying into delivery trucks just as quickly. If you hear word that the Nintendo Switch is back in stock in the US, Amazon and Walmart will be your best bet.

With massive warehouse inventories, speedy delivery, and quick checkout processes, these retailers are primed to pick up your Nintendo Switch order ahead of the queue. Plus, in all our time covering Nintendo Switch bundle deals, these stores have consistently won out in value, meaning you're more likely to grab some extras for your cash.

where to buy Nintendo Switch

In the UK, Currys and Game are likely to offer the first bundles of the pack, though don't underestimate the power of Argos same day delivery if you want your console now. We'll likely see the best prices come out of Currys, who are normally reluctant to increase the cost of the console as demand reaches its peak, and if you're looking for the fastest checkout times to secure yours before everyone else, you'll want to keep an eye on Amazon as well.

If stock has already been wiped clean at these retailers by the time you get there, you'll still be left wondering where to buy a Nintendo Switch. Luckily, plenty of non-tech retailers stock the Nintendo Switch as well, so you'll have luck with John Lewis, Jacamo and Studio among others.

In Australia, Amazon is likely your best bet, though it's worth keeping an eye on other online stores, such as Kogan and eBay. While it might take a while, big retailers such as JB Hi-Fi and Big W are also likely to receive new stock, and game retailers such as EB Games and The Gamesmen are also expected to get more units soon.

Don't leave yourself wondering where to buy a Nintendo Switch on the day, get prepped now and you have every chance of bagging one when the masses flock to the shelves.

Right now, you're more likely to find a Switch Lite than you are a regular Switch, but stock is still selling out fast. Here's a quick price comparison chart for the Switch Lite:

And here, you'll find a quick price comparison chart for the Switch itself.

We'll keep you updated on the Switch's stock levels.

Nintendo Switch in stock at Amazon with a fantastic price - but hurry

$

The Nintendo Switch is back in stock at Amazon with a fantastic £299 price tag that offers one of the best Nintendo Switch deals of the last few weeks. That's due to the recent surge in demand pushing prices up at a number of retailers hanging onto those last few boxes. However, you can now grab your own console for an excellent price.

We'd move fast on this one, we've been seeing Nintendo Switch stock flash in and out in less than 30 minutes before, so you'll have to get speedy to get your order in. We don't know how long this inventory will last, so if you've had your eye on the full console over the last few months you'll want to snag yours quickly.

Recent demand surges have pushed the price of any remaining stock up to eye-watering heights over the last few weeks, despite some retailers receiving shipments over the last few days. That means we're seeing flashes of Nintendo Switch deals available across the country, but the speediest of shoppers are snapping them up within minutes.

It's been a long time coming, but this latest Nintendo Switch stock may just be the start of the console's return to our shelves, but for now, this is going to be an incredible race to the checkout.

Not in the UK? You'll find the latest Nintendo Switch Lite bundle deals still available further down the page.

An excellent screen coupled with stellar sound makes for immersive gaming, especially when matched with the OnePlus 8's powerful, top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 internals and its huge 128GB or 256GB storage.

That means blasting, racing and RPGing through even the highest quality mobile games will be a dream. Let's not forget, the OnePlus 8-series is also Google Stadia-ready, so you can stream top-tier console and PC-grade title wherever you are.

On the inside, OnePlus phones runs Google's mobile operating system - Android, which means tonnes of apps and games can be downloaded onto it with ease. It isn't just any Android though - OnePlus loads up its own experience - OxygenOS.

Regularly ranked number one when it comes to software on smartphones, on the OnePlus 8, Oxygen OS glides thanks to that 90Hz screen and ample 8GB or 12GB RAM. Stacks of memory means seamless multitasking across loads of apps.

What about the camera? The OnePlus 8's powerful triple camera setup includes a high-resolution 48MP main sharp-shooter. When you want to get extra in-frame, a 16MP ultra-wide-angle snapper grabs high-impact sweeping landscapes, and there's also a macro camera gets you even closer to the action.

OnePlus 8

OnePlus is famous for being all about its community - listening, and responding, then listening some more. That's why an Always On Display feature is coming to the OnePlus 8-series after its community members requested it.

With software updates inspired by fan feedback frequently making their way to OnePlus phones, you're getting more than a just a device with the OnePlus 8 - you're joining a group; a community that never settles.

OnePlus's 'Never Settle' ethos extends to the OnePlus 8's 4,300mAh battery, which lasts and lasts thanks to its ample capacity and smart battery saving software. When it's time to charge, however, don't worry; Warp Charge 30T saves the day, powering up the battery from 0-50% in just 30 minutes - enough juice for a day of moderate use.

Unlike other 5G flagships, the OnePlus 8 won't break the bank - at £599 (8GB+128GB), you can pick it up in Onyx Black. If you want the specced out Glacial Green version, it'll cost just £699 (12GB+256GB), despite packing more storage and speeds than some phones over double the price.

In short, if you want a world-class, future-proofed entertainment system in your pocket for a sensational price, it's got to be the OnePlus 8.

7 new Netflix TV shows and movies you need to watch in June 2020

We now know what's new on Netflix in June 2020, and it includes the return of several great original TV series, a new movie from Spike Lee and the final season of controversial teen drama 13 Reasons Why (June 5). We've picked out seven highlights coming to Netflix in June 2020 below, so you've got a bunch of interesting stuff to add to your watch list.

All of this is available on Netflix globally in June 2020, with the exception of the last entry. Note, too, that while a release date has finally been announced for The Umbrella Academy season 2, you'll have to wait until July for the comic book show to return. But that doesn't mean there isn't still plenty to stream this month.

Here's what's worth watching on Netflix in June 2020.

Da 5 Bloods

Release date on Netflix: June 12

With theaters likely to be closed throughout June in the US and UK, a new Spike Lee-directed movie dropping straight onto Netflix sounds like a real treat. The above trailer is enormously promising, too. Da 5 Bloods is about a group of Vietnam vets who return to the country decades later as older, grumpier men to find the remains of their former squad leader (played by Black Panther's Chadwick Boseman in flashback) so he can have a proper burial. At the same time, the group looks to track down a cachet of buried treasure lost by the CIA during the war.

F is for Family season 4

Release date on Netflix: June 12

Breaking Bad's Jonathan Banks joins the cast of this working class 1970s-set animated comedy, which features the voices of Bill Burr and Laura Dern. If you don't mind dark jokes and a misery tinge to your adult animated shows, it's well worth catching up for season 4. Hey, there's a reason F is for Family made our list of the best Netflix animated series

The Last Days of American Crime

Release date on Netflix: June 5

In a crime-ridden United States of America, the government is planning on permanently broadcasting a signal that makes it impossible for its citizens to cause crimes. A career criminal, hacker and gangster team up for one last big heist before that signal comes. Édgar Ramírez, Michael Pitt and Sharlto Copley star in this trashy but fun-looking thriller, which is based on a graphic novel by notable comics talents Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini. Again, with no theaters open, any new movies that are worth a damn suddenly seem like a real benefit to our Netflix subscription.

Queer Eye season 5

Release date on Netflix: June 5

The Fab Five return for more life-affirming makeovers, at a time when viewers probably need this type of show the most. Queer Eye season 5 is based in Philadelphia, with 'everyday heroes' getting the Fab Five treatment, including a dog groomer and a DJ. Still one of the most comforting shows on Netflix.

The Politician season 2

Release date on Netflix: June 19

Ryan Murphy's first Netflix series returns for another season in June, with Payton Hobart (Ben Platt) running for senate, as set up by the end of season 1. The Politician didn't exactly wow critics, but like several other Murphy series (Nip/Tuck, The Assassination of Gianni Versace), it walks a careful line between sordid soap and prestige drama that makes for compelling viewing.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Release date on Netflix: June 26

Wait, the Eurovision Song Contest is now something we joke about? The outrage. This Netflix original comedy features Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams as Icelandic singers who get their shot at the big time, while the supporting cast features Pierce Brosnan (singing, we pray), Dan Stevens and Demi Lovato. The above sequence was filmed in Iceland. This has potential, and Wedding Crashers' David Dobkin is directing this one.

Rick and Morty season 4 (Netflix UK)

Rick and Morty

Release date on Netflix UK: June 16

Everything else on this list is available to access on Netflix globally, but here's one Netflix UK highlight worth pointing out: the entire fourth season of Rick and Morty arrives on the service from 16 June. Now you can enjoy it without ads on your own schedule. It's unclear when Rick and Morty season 4 will be available to stream in the US.

iPhone 12 might come without free earphones - but will people flock to AirPods?

Apple wants you to buy AirPods so bad it might ship iPhone 12 without earphones

When you buy a new phone, the handset itself isn't the only important thing in the box - the included supplements, like fast chargers or headphone adapters, can influence how you use your phone. Well, according to a rumor Apple is set to ship its upcoming iPhone 12 units at the end of the year without the EarPods wired headphones it typically includes.

This rumor comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, whose notes and remarks typically constitute some of the most reliable pre-release information on Apple devices (although he's not got a 100% track record). According to MyFixGuide reporting on one of his comments, Apple wants to improve sales of AirPods in 2020, and one of its key strategies to do so is by making a small tweak with the iPhone 12 extras.

Typically iPhones come with Apple's EarPods packed in - these are the aforementioned wired headphones that plug into the phone's Lightning Port. They're passable pieces of tech, that don't provide plenty of features or top-end audio quality, but they're designed for people who don't really need or care for those things.

By dropping the EarPods from the iPhone 12's extras, Apple apparently hopes to - and likely will - push more people to buy its true wireless earbuds, likely the AirPods (2019) or the AirPods Pro, unless new models get announced before the iPhone 12 release.

Is this a good change?

On the surface, this might seem like Apple is making a greedy change for some extra profit, but there are some reasons this might prove beneficial in the long run.

Most people buying the iPhone 12 will likely be upgrading from an older iPhone, as iOS users usually stick to the ecosystem - this means relatively few people buying the handset don't already have EarPods or other headphones they can already use on the device.

Even if some people are pushed to buy some headphones, if you're looking for something cheap and cheery to replace the EarPods you likely won't be leaping to the rather pricey AirPods anyway - Amazon is full of affordable wired headphones that are way cheaper, and there are even great cheap true wireless headphones that many will prefer to the AirPods.

Some would even argue that the omission of the EarPods is a good thing - many don't use cheap wired headphones included in Apple phones or those from other companies, as they're not fantastic, and many phone bundles include better headphones. Therefore there's lots of electronic waste produced for an item some will never use, which can be quite bad for the environment - by omitting EarPods from the iPhone 12, Apple might reduce its environmental impact and perhaps even keep the phone cost down too.

Of course, the absence of the EarPods is just a rumor for now, and when the iPhone 12 is released at the end of the year we might see that familiar sight when we're taking it out of the box. We'll find out whenever the device is released - we were expecting September but it's unclear if Covid-19 could push it back at all.

If you want to get the jump on Apple and buy AirPods now, here are the best prices for the newest models in your region.

Best wireless chargers 2020: how to charge up your iPhone or Android without wires

$
0
0

The best wireless charger you can buy in 2020 is going to be a Qi charger - the de facto standard that can wirelessly charge any modern iPhone, Samsung phones, Google Pixel 4, OnePlus 8 and every major smartphone that supports wireless charging. That part is easy.

Much harder is deciding which is the best wireless charger of all. We’ve tested the top wireless chargers on the market to give you the pros and cons of each, along with our personal recommendations, to give you final answers - and a variety of choices, too.

As anyone who’s bought a Qi-charging-capable phone can attest, you don’t just get a first-party charger in the box – you’ll have to venture out and buy one yourself. Aside from Samsung, none of the major phonemakers even produce their own.

Our list is full of names you’ll recognize: Belkin, Anker, Mophie, and other recognizable names - along with a couple you might not have. They won’t juice up your devices as fast as wired chargers, but they’re handy when you don’t want to keep plugging your phone in.

We’ve tested the wire-free chargers with a variety of phones, and smartwatches like the Apple Watch, and other rechargeable devices if they also charge those. We also note charging rates, in wattage, which might juice up some devices faster (depending on their maximum wireless charging rating, of course).

Lastly, make sure your phone can actually use wireless charging, as some older handsets - especially those with metal backs - likely don’t. Without further ado, here is our ever-growing list of the best wireless chargers we’ve seen.

Belkin BoostUp Wireless Charging Stand

The Belkin 10W is a step up in design and charging power - both of which are noticeable. That charging rate refilled 16% on our iPhone XS Max in 30 minutes.

The Belkin 10W has upstyled glossy plastic with matte rubber for the flat charging surface, as well as the ‘arms’ keeping your phone from sliding off the surface. It tangibly feels higher-quality, and in the solid black color, looks a bit more refined than cheaper chargers.

Whether you like pads or stands is more up to personal taste, but we enjoy the usefulness of keeping your device upright to check the time and scroll through notifications. It only charges phones, though - no smartwatches or tablets.

Anker PowerWave 15 with Quick Charge 3.0

The Anker 15W is one of the faster chargers on our list for this low of price, though only some leading Android phones will be able to notice the difference. For instance, in our 30-minute test, an iPhone XS Max only regained 10% - respectable but not tuned for Apple’s phones. Which isn't a surprise, given the latest iPhones haven't been confirmed to charge above 10W.

The Anker 15W has a bit more of an industrial look than most of its peers, with a metal casing and rubber foot. It’s one of the few on our list that dispenses with plastic for refined material, which is a nicer aesthetic for your desktop.

Like other pads, you’ll need to leave your device flat to keep it charging, but the faster rate should ease the sting of leaving your phone in recharge time-out. And given the Anker PowerWave 15 is very inexpensive - $35 (£35, around AU$51) on Amazon - it beats out some pricier chargers with lower rates (perhaps by shirking the 'Qi' license, as its packaging materials claim it has "Fast-Charging via Leading Technology").

Anker 10W Wireless Charging Stand

Wireless charging doesn’t have to be complicated or pricey - and the Anker 10W charger stand is an inexpensive, no-frills model to start you off.

Over a 30-minute test, the Anker 10W recharged an iPhone XS Max 15% - not impressive, but given the XS Max’s 3,174mAh battery, would likely charge the smaller battery iPhone 8 far faster. Android phones with high wireless charging ratings will fare better: a Samsung Galaxy Note 10 charged 28% in the same time period.

The Anker 10W won’t speedily charge your phone - it’s best deskside if you repeatedly pick up and put down your phone, or bedside overnight. An affordable entry to see if wireless charging works for you.

Mophie Powerstation Hub

The Mophie Powerstation Hub is a unique charger in that it’s mainly not a charger - it’s a battery pack. While it’s limited by its capacity, the capability to wirelessly charge on the go makes this a versatile (if pricey) solution.

The Powerstation Hub wirelessly charges up to 5W, which isn’t terribly fast - but you can do it while the battery simultaneously charges up to 3 other devices, which is cool. The other ports include one each of USB 1.0, USB 3.0, and USB-C slots.

The charger plugs directly into a wall socket to recharge, though the wireless charging won’t work while it is - a regrettable feature, but perhaps safer for the device, given how the extra weight might put pressure on the power prongs.

While the Powerstation isn’t as large and ungainly as higher-capacity power banks, it won't fit in your pocket either, leaving it mostly convenient for anyone packing a purse or small bag.

But with versatility comes cost, and the Powerstation Hub is by far the most expensive charger on this list. With a retail price of $99 (around £81, AU$146), this isn’t affordable for most folks - and more a niche solution for those with the cash to throw around.

Belkin Wireless Charging Dock

The Belkin Wireless Charging Dock is a rarity in the wireless charging world: it can juice up both your phone and your Apple Watch at the same time. Most chargers can't service Apple's smartwatch, and this product throws in a standard phone/device charger, too.

The stand is a classy off-white, like most of Belkin's charger range. The pill-shaped base has a matte finish, and the rounded, upright phone stand on the left side has a divoted lip for your device to rest in. The circular watch nub looks much like the charger that comes with the Apple Watch, including the magnet that clips the smartwatch in place.

While the Apple Watch portion charges at 5W/1A, the rate of the official Apple charger, the phone portion only recharges at 7.5W. While that's certainly a lower rate than other units on this list, it may be enough for iPhones: given Apple's reluctance to disclose its specs, it's unclear if its latest phones in the iPhone XS generation improved on the iPhone X's alleged 7.5W charge, per 9to5Mac.

Which means you might want to look elsewhere for a faster charger if you own an Android phone with a higher confirmed wireless charging rate. But if you have an Apple Watch, chances are you're all-in on Apple's ecosystem anyway.

Google Pixel Stand

The Pixel Stand was released alongside the Google Pixel 3 and has specific features that only activate when Pixel phones are slotted into it.

True, it functions like any other 10W charger, and will refill any Qi-compatible phone's battery. It's a stand-style charger, with an angled pill-shaped back, ridged foot for traction, and circular base, all covered in a white rubber material.

Slide a Pixel phone into the stand, however, and you can set it to show a gallery of photos, activate Google Assistant, and link your Nest Hello video doorbell to automatically display when someone rings it.

But that's a handful of features for a steep price - officially $79 (£69, AU$119) on Google's store, though discounted a bit elsewhere - for an upmarketed 10W charger.

Amazon Prime Day 2020 date is now set for September, say company sources

$

Amazon Prime Day 2020 will take place in September. That's according to insider sources speaking to the Wall Street Journal, claiming that the annual online sales deals marathon will shift from its usual July slot two months further into the year.

Like businesses across the globe, Amazon has felt the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, with a surge in demand leading to stock and distribution issues. The move to later in the year is believed to give Amazon time to restore "normalcy" to its services and workforce.

The news also means that Amazon should be able to fulfill a greater variety of orders, and approach a return to the speedy delivery reputation that has made Amazon such a force to be reckoned with in online retail.

During the pandemic it has been forced to limit its sales to essential items only in some regions of the world, while its free next day and 1-hour delivery services, exclusive to Amazon Prime subscribers, were hit with delays.

The sources claim there is still concern that Amazon's capacity to fulfill orders in its customarily speedy manner may still exist in September. Right now, some of its star Memorial Day 2020 deals in the US have been impacted.

Potential Amazon Prime Day dates

Amazon Prime Day, which last year became a full two-day event despite the name, would likely kick off on one of four new dates (all are Mondays): September 7, September 14, September 21 or September 28.

While this would be a shift from the summer sales window (which had likely been settled on as it tends to be a relatively quiet period for retailers in comparison to the fourth quarter of the year), it would retain enough distance from the Black Friday and Christmas shopping surges to make it worth both customers' and Amazon's time – and money.

Its closer proximity to Black Friday 2020 could in fact take some of the shine away from that shopping sales event which, while open to a much wider array of retailers, is still dominated by Amazon in the online realm.

iPhone 12's cameras may be better than the iPhone 11's in this one way

$
0
0

We’re fully expecting the iPhone 12 range to have improved cameras, and one improvement  all four models could have is a better wide-angle snapper.

That’s according to DigiTimes, which, citing sources from the supply chain, says “the wide-angle lenses of all the new iPhones will be upgraded from 6P to 7P.”

That ‘7P’ refers to a 7-element lens, and having more elements can help minimize aberrations and distortion – though notably there’s no guarantee of this, and more elements isn’t always better. Still, if Apple is changing up the lens then its goal is presumably to improve such pictures.

The site additionally reiterated claims we’ve heard that the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Max will have a dual-lens camera, while the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max would have a triple-lens one (likely with a LiDAR scanner as well).

Less money, more sales

Beyond the above, the leak revealed the companies that are apparently building the camera modules for each phone, as well as the quantities they’re supposedly building.

Sharp and O-film Tech are apparently taking on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max, and are planning for between 50 and 55 million units. LG Innotek meanwhile is said to be building cameras for the two higher end models, and is apparently aiming for 35 to 40 million units.

That in turn shows that if this information is accurate then Apple expects the cheaper models in the iPhone 12 range to be by far the most popular – though that’s no surprise, and we would take this information with a pinch of salt.

There are still some things we don’t know about the iPhone 12 cameras, such as how many megapixels they’ll have, but with them not landing before September there’s plenty of time for those details to leak.

Doom Eternal will ditch divisive Denuvo Anti-Cheat with next update

$

Doom Eternal will kill off the recently added Denuvo Anti-Cheat software in the game’s next update on PC.

After fans reported they were unable to play Doom Eternal’s campaign without installing the divisive anti-cheat software, developer id Software announced that it would be removed in update 1.1.

In a candid post on the Doom subreddit, executive producer at id Software Marty Stratton stressed that the decision to implement Denuvo Anti-Cheat wasn’t forced upon them by Doom Eternal’s publisher Bethesda, and that despite their best intentions, feedback from players has made it clear the company must reevaluate its approach.

“At a minimum we must consider giving campaign-only players the ability to play without anti-cheat software installed, as well as ensure the overall timing of any anti-cheat integration better aligns with player expectations around clear initiatives – like ranked or competitive play – where demand for anti-cheat is far greater.” said Stratton.

Stratton also made it clear that any performance or stability issues players have had with the game are not down to the anti-cheat software. “Many have unfortunately related the performance and stability issues introduced in Update 1 to the introduction of anti-cheat. They are not related.”

Hacked off

Update 1.1 will fix several crashes that are occurring when players equip customizable skins, and the developer has also identified and fixed a number of other memory-related crashes that should improve overall stability.

It’s impressive to see a developer react so swiftly to complaints from a game’s community, particularly as tackling cheats is an issue that is difficult to stop without impeding on players who stick to the rules.

We’ve seen blockbuster titles such as Call of Duty: Warzone wage war on cheats, enabling two-factor authentication and other measures in a bid to deter a small minority who only want to ruin the fun for everyone else.

OnePlus 8T line might not come with the super-premium OnePlus phone we thought

$
0
0

The OnePlus 8T range might include two devices, not three - that's because the third phone, a McLaren-branded handset that we expected because such a phone was included in the OnePlus 6T and 7T lines, looks likely not to exist. The reason seems to be an end to the partnership between OnePlus and McLaren.

As spotted by Reddit users on the OnePlus subreddit, OnePlus is no longer listed as an official partner of McLaren, despite the phone company's logo appearing on the car company's Partners page in previous years.

So it seems OnePlus is no longer an official partner of McLaren, which makes a OnePlus 8T bedecked with the car company's logos seem very unlikely. TechRadar has reached out to OnePlus for clarification on the matter though, in case this is just a small error.

RIP, OnePlus 8T McLaren Edition

The OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition was a version of the OnePlus 7T Pro but a car-themed design wasn't the only change. The phone also had more RAM and storage than the non-McLaren device, making it the most powerful OnePlus phone of 2019. Arguably the most distinctive element, however, was the 'Papaya Orange' color of the phone.

Unless OnePlus can find another company to sponsor - and given how many other phone companies have car-themed versions, with a Lamborghini-themed Oppo Find X and a Porsche variant Huawei Mate 30, it will likely be a motor sports brand - it seems the best OnePlus phone of this year might be the OnePlus 8T Pro.

Other than the OnePlus 6T and 7T variants, the third phone sporting McLaren branding was the OnePlus Concept One, a device not available to consumers that was shown off earlier this year. Suffice it to say the OnePlus Concept Two, if such a thing ever exists, will likely not be decorated in that 'Papaya Orange' color.

Bored of Netflix? Check out this amazing streaming service movie library

The movie streaming service Mubi just seriously stepped up its game by offering a new library of films to subscribers. While the service's long-standing offering was to give its users one movie every day, then after 30 days, cycle out each film, this gives film lovers a chance to catch the movies they've missed.

Even though Mubi carries a lot of independent and international cinema, you'll see movies available to stream now that you probably do recognize, like Hoop Dreams if you're in the US, or Bong Joon-ho's The Host if you're in the UK. Some movies are in both territories, too, like Southland Tales from Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly, which was released under its 'Perfect Failures' label.

This library fundamentally makes Mubi a more attractive streaming service, though like on Amazon Prime, some of the films listed are paid rentals. The library is available now to watch on its website, but an update to the app will add the library feature eventually, too.

Every movie in there is picked by Mubi's curators, and you don't have to be a member to browse what they have on offer. Just go here and take a look.

Mubi costs $10.99 per month, or £9.99 per month, but there is a week's free trial if you want to give it a look first.

Netflix alternatives

Depending on where you are, there are plenty of Netflix alternatives to check out if you have more specialist interests in cinema. If you're in the US, our list of the best Amazon Prime Video channels gives you loads of optional add-ons to access more movies. You might also want to check out The Criterion Channel if you're based in the US.

In the UK, Mubi is a great choice, but so is BFI Player. Combining subscriptions to both, you'll unlock a lot more of the kinds of movies you wouldn't see as often on other streaming services.

Grand Theft Auto publisher has 93 games in the works – is GTA 6 one of them?

$
0
0

Grand Theft Auto publisher, Take-Two Interactive, has revealed it has 93 "full game releases" planned for the next five years – and we're hoping GTA 6 is one of them.

During a recent earnings call (via GamesRadar), Take-Two president Karl Slatoff said that this line-up is the strongest in the company's history, but what can we expect? Well, according to Slatoff, 63 of these games are "core gaming experiences", 17 will be "mid-core or arcade" and 13 are casual games.

However, out of these 93 games, 21 will be exclusively mobile titles - with the other 72 landing on PC, consoles and streaming platforms. But, perhaps the most interesting stat from this meeting is that half of this games line-up are from existing IPs. Suggesting we could be seeing GTA 6 in that five-year window, with the highly-anticipated next GTA falling into that "core gaming experiences" category.

"This is a larger pipeline than we've had before, we've been talking about this for quite some time. Our expectation is that we'd like to keep up this velocity," Slatoff said. "It's really important for us to build scale, and this is one way that we're doing it. We need more at-bats."

CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the publisher plans to smooth out its financial results with "a handful or greater of new significant releases every year". And it looks like the company believes it may have some big successes in the pipeline.

"With our strong catalog, with our live service offerings, and with our annual releases, we can have great strength, even in a light year, even though it's not our goal to have a light year, and then do even better in the year when we're able to launch a number of titles, which is our strategy, and even better than that if we're fortunate enough to have a blockbuster title. And we have some of those as well," Zelnick said.

GTA in the next five years is likely

Neither Rockstar Games nor Take-Two Interactive has confirmed that GTA 6 is in the works but five years is a long time. While we're hoping to see the next GTA in the next year or two, considering the rumored size of the game, we could be waiting longer.

While Take-Two didn't specifically mention GTA 6 during the earnings call, we can assume that it will be in that line-up of upcoming games. In addition, the fact that we're going to see games from existing Take-Two IPs fuels rumors that we may see Bully 2 in the future.

But that's just from Rockstar Games, Take-Two is the parent company of developers such as Private Division and 2K Games. While we know may of these exisiting IP games will likely be 2K Sports titles like the NBA series, and that a new BioShock is on the way, we could also see sequels to the likes of L.A. Noire and Civilization. But that could be wishful thinking.

For now, we're hoping it's not long until we hear more about Take-Two's plans, and to finally get confirmation that GTA 6 is on the way.

Why the entire open source movement is under threat right now

$
0
0

To date, the Covid-19 pandemic has affected over 170 technology events worldwide. Some of them have been postponed and others have moved online, but the majority have been cancelled outright.

This has had a significant impact on the open source community, placing high-profile organizations and projects under mounting financial pressure.

The Open Source Initiative (OSI), the organisation responsible for assessing open source licenses and preventing, “the abuse of the ideals and ethos inherent to the open source movement”, has indicated it needs to raise $600,000 to meet its funding goals for 2020.

The Drupal Association, which oversees the development of the popular Drupal CMS, has already had to lay off staff and as a direct result of event cancellations - and it too needs to raise $500,000.

At a surface level, the role of a technology event in helping foster free and open source software (FOSS) communities isn’t immediately apparent. But the reality is that running and attending events has helped raise money for FOSS projects and their governing bodies for decades, sustaining their existence.

Further, these events offer various opportunities for the FOSS projects to educate new users and onboard fresh contributors, coordinate their core development activities, perform project housekeeping and brainstorm ideas for future development.

Open source community

Event cancellations can also negatively impact the already limited funds of participating open source projects and individual contributors.

In a bid to minimise the monetary impact of a cancelled event on the FOSS ecosystem, a group of stalwarts from the community, along with their corporate backers, have banded together to form the FOSS Responders working group.

In addition to creating a corpus fund, the group is identifying open source events and communities that are most in need of support and also wants to support individuals who are unable to absorb conference-related cancellation fees.

The fund, much like the community it is designed to sustain, is hosted on open crowdfunding platform Open Collective. Not only is the platform's code released under the MIT License, but it also publishes financial information relating to campaigns.

The Sloan Foundation has contributed $50,000 to the FOSS Responders fund, while Google, Indeed.com, and Sentry.io have pitched in $10,000 each, bringing the total close to $100,000.

FOSS Responders is also holding a virtual funding event on Friday May 22, and Indeed.com has promised to match all donations upto $5,000.

Besides monetary assistance, FOSS Responders is also working to create a resource center to equip projects with technical resources to help them engage with their community and even organise events virtually.

If you are looking for financial help, you can apply to the fund for an emergency grant either as an individual or as a project. And if you want to support the open sources community, here’s a collection of crowdfunding campaigns set up by FOSS foundations to help mitigate the monetary setbacks it has suffered.

Huami Amazfit Bip S to launch in India on June 3rd
